Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Matthew 23:1-13 KJV
1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

The seat of the Priesthood in order of Moses. Moses was more then just a religious leader but also a law giver in a sense of being a judge to the people of rights and wrong. As a leader he made judgment of rights and wrongs to the people. He was not just a servant of God but a servant of the people as far as the law of legal matters. These two titles gave way to much interpretation of what was faith and what was law of Moses. The law of faith is often decided by something that is suppose to be at a higher level then the law of mankind. Meaning the law of love. When Jesus began to speak he tell the Pharisses they sit in the power of Moses in regards to laws binding man with burdens to heavy to carry. If I lump all the laws of our land on you and say if you break one stitch of that law you will pay a stiff penality and enforce it then most would never leave their home in fear and dread of breaking one of the laws of our land. It might seem minor something we might do, and most time those in charge of a law could enforce some laws that seem trivial, but they do not. The reason being they to do it or have done it and no harm. The value of the law being changed because of no harm done. Yet somewhere someone was probably hurt doing whatever it was and so it became a law. It like a child walking over a river bed that no longer has water and the log is higher then five feet. Doesn't sound dangerous to walk a log, until you loose your balance and hit a sharp rock and it kills you or leaves you with a nice big goose egg on your head. Now a law is created that says no one can walk across a riverbed that is five foot high because if they fall it could lead to death. For centuries no one cross to the otherside even loosing contact with people on the other side, just because no one would cross over.

Someway we get back to that point. The Rabbi's task was to teach both about faith and the law. Rabbi translated into our language of today would be a teacher. The Pharisees loved to be called teachers, or even master. That would also be Roman teachers in the streets as well. Yet Jesus is speaking of only the Jewish leaders here. To teach in the streets is not the norm for today's world, but people still do it. There are still criers or street preachers in the streets announcing good news. Yet are they are teacher. Christ is alluding to who the real teacher is, but he does not quiet speak it. Instead he continues about the woes of the Pharisees needing stardom in order to be a teacher. To teach is no honor in one since because even teachers need teaching. They put themselves up on petal stools only to need to be humble. Jesus was a teacher, but he was willing to serve. Teaching is service. Many teachers for education work harder then some men that do heavy labor for the job continues outside the 8 to 3 classroom because of grading papers and preparing assignments. Lazy teachers do there best to not grade papers at home, and short change their students by not making them work equally as hard. Religious leaders never assign homework but on occasion. Would homework help most people probably not, most people either choose to pick up their Bible and read or they do not. Most of us never pick up a law book, but we understand their is many laws never even discussed publicly that we may have to be accounted for. That where I pick up the story of about the five foot high bridge, a better bridge design is made and it must be tried out and the only place to place it is across the five foot ditch on the riverbed between the two sides. It is a bridge that is suppose to be safer but may not be. After centuries the bridge is made only to find the people that stared at the people on the other side had no compassion, instead they had felt abandon by the other group of people and left behind. The law had divide people and caused division instead of love.

Pharisees because of their laws and their view of God had caused more division then love. Some of their laws from drinking wine out of a cup must be covered with some netting to strain the knats from getting into their cup. As we look at the woes the next few days we will see how the Pharisees did and people sometime mimick could cause division between two groups of people. We will also examine Jesus' teaching about how the habits of Pharisees would cause division between themselves and the People. Had Jesus set himself up over the Pharisees in this chapter in Matthew? Perhaps, but what we must begin to understand that Jesus was teaching that the Pharisees did not considering themselves as equals. No one especially in the adult world likes to take orders from someone that never makes a mistake themselves. Two days ago I had to go fix and error on a page. I did not make that error. Some people may of felt I need to make that error but it was error that really made me mad. They changed my writting to say I was God, I no way and never will believe myself to be God. God makes sure of that in my life more times by taking me to my own knees in prayer. More figuratively then actually bending of the knee, but the reality God brings us to our knees if we choose to hear him. If I could gotten my hands on that person I would have like to take my hands and literally choke that person because that how I felt for two days. I being truthful about the situation. Sometimes people fail to realize what they do to another person. Nor do they care. I hate to be right about someone that is evil, but if a person is then they are. One error can cost someone a lifetime of hurt and even money. I am not paid for doing this site. I correct the error on my page. However I will share with you if you ever see a person act like God and declare they are God you will know it, because what they do will follow their actions. Their actions of not caring for people is one of them. How long can a human show compassion to someone that abuses them daily, not very long. Perhaps that why ministers in general spend many days alone because what they must speak in correction and can sound authorative at times. If one only hears love and never correction then love becomes abuse. If one becomes angry they can show abuse as well. Teaching comes in many ways but speaking with gentleness of Christ is what we often accept out of Jesus, but he was not always gentle with correction. This passage shows his anger and displeasure of the pharisees of his day using the language of his day to express his thoughts and feelings. As I go over this chapter the next few days you see more of how displease Jesus is with the Pharisees.

I chosen to express myself hear only to help some in my area that know about the situation to remain continual silence because they are to lazy to take care of the situation that occuring by doing so they become law breakers and accomplice in the breaking of the law. Teachers and leaders have a huge responsibility to set the example, but even they loose their cool. If we think Jesus was not a man then we are wrong for he too lost his cool dealing with the Pharisees of his day.

There is point to my madness all that teach and all that preach do have to do the same as everyone else and they are accountable to teach truth, even if they have a hard time obeying truth. Yet it is easy to set these people on petal stools they do themselves by putting on the suit coat and laws. Yet they to struggle and instead of admitting that they often put on more makeup to cover their sin, so they look perfect in appearance but when they go behind doors where no one can see them they may or are melt in humilitation of being caught by God or someone else. As Jesus teaches us that laws are for a purpose as well, they never supercede love or suppose to cause separation between people.

Dear Heavenly Father, God's grace is sufficient for our needs. no matter who is teaching or instructing, it always supercedes the law but does not mean we are never corrected. Help us to trust in your love and the correction of your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:

Hebrews 5:12-14 KJV
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
