Striving Against Sin Unto Death
1/21/2017

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Hebrews 12:1-4 KJV
(1) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
(2) Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(3) For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
(4) Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

One of the hardest things people do is strive against the desire of their heart that are evil. Yet most people do not go around wondering if this is sin or that is sin unless perhaps you are child first learning about your faith. In general, do what feels good and forget it. The apostle agree when they learned the gentiles received the Holy Spirit that the only restriction they would put on the people were not to eat meat of idols and sexual immorality. The world of unbelievers is definitely a world of sexual immorality, but sexual immorality lives within the church world too at times. In Paul’s day he would just throw it out of the church.

Today is the day our newly elected President will take official office of the white house. As our nation watches, I can not help but wonder what all this conflict will bring to our nation. Yet as a believer our civic duty is to back our leaders, and yet in reality we have the right to disagree with our leaders. Each president takes up the cross of our nation on his shoulders. He not only takes up his personal cross, but the cross of our nation. Choice each leader makes will influence our nation for good or bad. As believers, the choices we make carrying our cross of faith will influence others. Our cross being whether we were responsible in the things we do.

Jesus when carrying his cross as being Lord, was surrounded by a crowd of witnesses. He died being who He was. He died knowing the responsibility of what He claimed on his shoulders, and had the power to call in the angels to protect him. His only crime was being Lord. As died knowing He would prove the world wrong by being raised from the grave.

As believers our job is to strive to fight against sin first in our own life, but living with the reality of our humanity. We take up our cross to fight and war against sin that causes harm against others. Yet being ourselves and fighting the war of sin, can cause persecution. People seldom understand the choice of saying I will not deal with peer pressure to do something, just because everyone else is doing it, does not make it always right. To take a stand and run the race set before us to strive against people who will be little you for your choice to not to go with the crowd. Our war of faith is not about fighting with knives and guns, it is about fighting against sin. To strive to be God’s child not a child of the devil thinking one can still get to heaven beyond the throne.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to war against sin. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:1 Corinthians 9:24-27 KJV
(24) Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
(25) And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
(26) I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
(27) But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
