Do I Quit? 08/21/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris1 Timothy 2:1-15 KJV
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
How many men love to use the last verse to declare a woman salvation through child birth, never thinking on how that really sounds or if in that context it is so. Woman if having children was a must to be saved, we be wondering about kind woman that never had a baby. I am not quitting teaching Scripture, I going to back up to the point without Mary conception we would have no salvation through Christ Jesus men or woman. Yet perhaps Paul's argument/instructions in this chapter if living today, would be how are you ladies living your life. Are you a slut, a prostitute, living in the lust of the flesh? Are you living in fashion of appearing godly but living in sin, or looking like sin, but having faith in Jesus. One way or the other one is to clean up their act/lifestyle. If women ruled the roost would men still have a place in society.
Equally in marriage is often not without someone in charge of something. What if this was written at the time Deborah was a judge in the book of Judges would it still be applicable. What about the time of Mary and Elizabeth. What about the time of Queen Esther. Paul is writting young Timothy at a time when women and especially religious women had a place not only in the home, but her husband had final say and was master of his home. The women in general were not quite enslaved but might as well been for they were thought as property. Perhaps more important here is Paul is instructing young Timothy how to teach women to bear their cross as believers in a strict society where women had no say or freedom at times. I think of the culture of Afganistan how women had gained so much freedom and now, how that freedom is most likely to change under their new leaders and rulers. How their life is fixing to change at the cost of many lives in time to come. Most of us women in American society could not adjust to the total silence, and allowing husband to make all the decision and our religious leaders making all decisions as well.
Growing up in a minister home, my father was not always a pastor, but we still had that proper attire for church and even outside church. Most decent families are very careful about their dress attire to some degree. It is more culture in some cases then a family issue. Yet even so my sister and my dresses were always pressed and ready to wear for church. Though we had a say in color and pattern of our clothes, we often were very modest. Our modesty was often based on where we were going, to church, swimming/fishing and to school. The attire was not the same. Yet the attire was not indecent even by world's standards. In today's world less is better, in church standards, more covered the better and less concern on dressiness of the ocassion, but moral decency.
Paul is writing Timothy about modesty, about simple attire of women, that they should not give way to need of jewelry and fineries, living as harlots, or women of idols. That their head was not to be sheered or wearing of fancy ornaments, but living simply before the Lord in all their ways. What would Paul say to women that loose their hair to chemo and radiation, or just simpling balding, he not putting these woman down, he saying simple take what you have an live in respect to husband and to God and not necessarily in that order. Base your status on society status perhaps of what is not consider to be a harlot. In other words don't look like a ho, a slut, or prostitute.
Separate yourself to be holy before God and your husband and family. To bear your cross as a woman or even a man, in honor to both God and your spouse. In Paul's day it was bearing children, taking care of the home and in service to one's husband and family. Paul also encourage women not to be drunk or busybodies, but to set the example of faith. Women that setting the example are going to bear fruit of faith and produce children of faith as Abraham produced children of faith.
It very important to read verse 6 in this chapter in I Timothy 2 because it says Jesus gave himself a ransome for all. Not just men but all people. Christ died for all people. Our salvation is not in our clothing, our clothing is not only social status but a testimony of faith. We do certain things because we love God back and it a part of who we are as believers. Our salvation never came from physical child birth, but through Christ. Paul is talking about modesty of a woman of faith and none yearning for those things that material, or unnecessary to faith. If you can't grow your hair long, don't loose sleep we not living in Paul's day.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to live in modesty and holiness for you and not in the ways of the world. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: 1 Peter 4:6-9 KJV
6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
