Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Acts 2:1-47 KJV
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Flames of fire appeared on top of all in the people where the disciples were, who was in the house with the disciples the women too. Today I writting on the Day of Pentecoste which is celebrate 40 to 50 days after Easter. The reason it is celebrate way after Easter is because Jesus spent 40 days with the disciples in Galilee. The disciples then return to Jerusalem to wait on the Holy Spirit after the ascension of Jesus, on a mountain outside of Jerusalem, the city of Jerusalem must be taken care of first as far as the need for repentance and understanding of the events that occurred during passover.

One of the first signs of the appearing of the Holy Ghost was cloven tongues of fire, I personally never witnessed cloven tongues of fire upon another believer, but if I was requesting a sign from God to know a person was anointed it might be one I would desire, until the reality that even false prophets speak sometimes by empowerment of God's spirit, and i set back and ask wait hold on, why is that information important. Balaam had to prophesy as God directed, Saul had to rule Israel by God's power while in power until he sinned against God. What is special is the disciples had seen Jesus and seen his ascension into heaven, before the power of the Holy Spirit was given. There is a difference with power of the Holy Spirit and receiving of the Holy Spirit. They seem like the same thing in scripture until one understands God was igniting the believers for service to spread the Gospel. When we receive the Holy Spirit as far as accepting the Holy Spirit in our life, we are receiving him and his mark/his seal that we are God's children, and are doing our best to follow his instructor and his word. When Baptized by the HOly Spirit we are under the power of the Holy Spirit and commissioned by the Spirit to go beyond our normal course of sharing Christ as a believer. There is only one Spirit but the empowerment or infilling comes in order to preach, teach, build the church in other words, to heal, and to deliver from sin and illness. No one is in control of God's Spirit, God spirit gives the believer instruction.

In my own experience when God moved richly in my life, I still struggle with events I seen, because something were foreign to me and rightly so. I know something were definitely of God and other things were definitely not. Conclusion of those events perhaps what i can say is God allowed and taught me how to follow his leading even in the mist of those things not of his. It is easy to get wrapped up in what God is doing in our spiritual life that we fail to be aware of God deliverance around us of unseen storms and traps set for us. The prayer of awareness is necessary in some situations, if God's leading you to pray that way while keeping your eyes on Jesus be ever so listening to Christ, so that he your commentator and not the world.

If i could ask you to do one thing with this chapter it would be keep reading it for there are many interpretation of this one chapter, but what often left out is what is God doing to build the church and how is he using the apostles and people in the upper room to share the Gospel?Cloven tongues of fire a symbol of the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the believer. The different languages can be explained simply the fisher man and tax collector all dealt with people of other languages. With mystery of how disciples and Apostles of Jesus spoke in different language there only one thing left about the mystery of tongues what did they speak, they spoke the wonderful works of God. They were praising God, and Peter steps up and begins to preach repentance for the crime against Jerusalem in Jerusalem, about how they had crucified Jesus and he raised from the dead and had departed into heaven. How Christ died because they crucified him and it was sin against God. Men and women began to ask what must we do, because of our sin. Peter said believe, repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus for God has made him both Lord and Savior. The crowd repented and church began to increase that day, over 3000 was added that day.

Now why is this the work of the Holy Spirit? John the baptist preached repentance and water baptism but the disciples preached repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus. They were preaching forgiveness to the crowd for their sin, but telling them what the sin was they committed. If a child scribbles on a wall with a crayon, you parent will probably point to you and say it is wrong and some children will cry and even say they did not do it with a crayon in their hand sitting by the wall. Child when he confesses he sinned, he then is told not to do it again, maybe even spanked or punished in some way depending on age of the child.

The point being Apostles stood up and corrected Jerusalem. Jerusalem was not happy, so they inflicted punishment even though the apostle were right and some would plot agains the disciples and even have them stoned, while others would repent as did those the day of pentecoste. The attraction of the wind rushing through the house and then cloven tongues appearing above their heads was enough to cause a hallelujah chorus of shouts and singing in many languages, that crowd came and Peter preached as Jesus would when a crowd came near. God drawed that crowd to those disciples with the wonderful works of God that were being spoken. Giving opportunity to preach. During these revivals people would be healed, and deliverance would take place just if Jesus never left because of the power of the Holy Spirit given by God. God also promised a comforter the Holy Spirit to each believer.

The baptism being more then a side show act, but a beautiful testimony of how God's grace is sufficient when sin is proven against God to the unbeliever. God uses conviction for correction to draw us nigh/near to God. Now when this happens the church world grows. Once forgiven, one is is set free from the pain of guilt and not knowing how to change the situation when it only took belief and turning to obey the Lord. The gifts of the Holy Spirit is love, hope, joy, long suffering, gentleness, kindness, and so forth to the new believer.

Dear Heavenly Father, let us examine the day of Pentecoste in such a way to understand what really taking place on that day and how events can be explained and deliverance can be given to all believers despite sin of misunderstanding of the day of Pentecost. Let the day of Pentecost be celebrated in the church. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
