Sealing Of The Grave
4/11/2020

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Matthew 27:49-66 KJV
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

This story begins at the end of Christ death, but it goes on to speak of the veil in the temple that separated the Holies of Holies from the rest of the temple was torn in half from top to bottom, and the earth did quake and rocks were rented/split. And many, not all of the saints arose and walked into the holy city of Jerusalem. The graves did open, remember the cave they place Jesus in and it was sealed, well tombs were sealed to keep people out. The dead came out of their tombs and walked into the city. Not all arose, and that is key here to remember many did, but not all. Many does not mean all the Jews were raised to life only 144,000 of them. Then we must remember that righteousnes of a people were based on faith in God and his word in the Old Testament. Now I do not know about you but it would be enough to scare me, make me run and hide or out of curiousity to follow the dead into the city. I not sure which. After all this event would of shaken most people.

Now the burial of Jesus had to come to be. A rich man and Roman Centurion/soldier name Joseph of Arimathaea who was a disciple begged for Jesus body from Pilate, and wraped it in clean linen cloth and laid him in a new tomb, which he had hewed out of rock and then rolled a great stone for a door to the spulchre(grave inside a cave). Now we must understand several things dead people walking into Jerusalem came up out of the graves. Many graves were in caves in that region. The earth did quake but men and women walked out of the caves they laid once dead in. The stone rented/divided(in half of tombs that were sealed) No one ever thinks about Lazarus being the first resurrected from a tomb or the need for the stone to be rolled away for his resurrection after four days. The story of Larazus is found in John 11. About a month or so ago i discussed this story how it could of been a stunt because the distance was not far, but the truth is you have to decide if you believe it is possible for God to raise the dead. If you can not believe this you can not believe in Christ resurrection which happened on the third day of his death. Then you probably do not believe you or anyone else will rise again after being dead, then the tomb of the dead being rose from their tombs seem impossible too. No that is where faith must be applied, that God is able to do the impossible.

Now the events alone would of caused much concern but nothing more is really said about this other then for Jesus tomb was sealed and soldiers watched the tomb. Did they believe Jesus arose, let me ask you this would you as only a local leader want the news to reach Roman that dead people walked into Jerusalem or that Jesus might rise from the grave. I am sorry this is not usual everyday event anywhere. How can you prove someone was dead and now alive, if there clothing was changed and their appearance. Jesus clothing and appearance changed when they seen him alive in tomorrow lesson.

There are those even ourselves sometimes that would like to cover the story of how God changed a persons life or miracles that occur in a person life because it something that can not be explained by the medical or the governmental world. Many in the Roman world believe in gods and goddess that had no power to do anything. They were gods and goddess that represented perhaps an ideology or luck. Maybe an idea of how things came to be and a good story or yarn about life events of change and technology or strength in a person that was greater then most people. Jesus did not make a change in Roman history til time of Constantine. Though Christianity would flourish in the Roman Empire, it took time and much preaching and witnessing. Even for the Christian world to go through persecution.

If there was no power in faith in Christ Jesus would people still believe? Many false religions rise and fall in our world. Most religions one will learn something from it that will be of value to a personal growth, especially in reguards to discipline or knowledge, the ability to war against the opposition of society that knocks one down and keeps one often down. What makes Christianity any different it is the promise of eternal life? No many religions promise eternal life. Some even claim to see evidence of those gods and goddess afterwards as well. What makes Jesus different? Feelings are flighty, creativity is an art, and to make new things whole again can be scientific with knowledge of how to fix things.

When Jesus comes into a person heart, the person is changed completely, even goes through a complete transformation, with out the hounding of others for change. This is eternal change of the heart that shine forth into your daily life. Don't worry some of that old nature tries to creep in because of environment but the old nature is truly gone. God begins to teach by His Spirit about who he is and who his Son is. He begins to do a work in your life, that you alone could not do. He gives you a instructure to teach you patience, joy, love, hope, forgiveness, gentleness, long suffering and many other things. you already might be a gentle person but you may of been cussing out the person or thing in your life the whole time you demonstrated gentleness, and now are no longer doing so. Something in life come with seasoning and something only God through the Holy Spirit can change.

Changes of discipline without someone constantly badgering you to change, instead God changes by the Holy Spirit. These changes come because God uses change to also teach a person about the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Even rich people need the comfort of God. The comfort is not always about a storm, or laying in bed in the middle of the night in fear or/and worrying about situations. It is about the companionship of God with man. Christ through his death, was to bring unity to God his Father. His death to bring peace to the world only for God to raise Christ back up to give us a new hope of tomorrow. Jesus taught twelve disciples and more what everyday with Jesus was like as he walked around Israel and surrounding areas. He paid his taxes by sending a disciple to catch a fish, he feed the people, he healed the people, and he entertained the people with the telling of stories and lessons to improve life and to make life more abundant on a daily bases. He whisper to our hearts he loves us and warns us of danger when it is coming, so it can be avoided, or he may warn and takes us through the danger in the presence of our enemies for his glory. Guess what God does not have to speak audibly for us to know what we need to do in good and bad situations. It is instruction that is more then just common sense, it can defy common sense and will be successful. That why God uses people that are obedient to his will, to be an extended hand of his will and obedient of his ways for His glory and honor. He takes us through the valley and over the mountains and across the plains and through the desert pass. He takes us through the wilderness of life, showing his power, his judgment, mostly his love and compassion, and mercy that we often fail to understand.

You can only see the journey may take you through by reading about the journey of others including Biblical journeys and relationship with God and it is always about individual choice.

Dear Heavenly Father give us faith for the days head, we know not what you will bring in life, comfort your people with your Spirit and help us to trust you daily. Help us to believe your word so we can always believe in your Son's resurrection and the resurrection of the saints. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
