I Thirst 9/13/2024
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisJohn 19:28-30 KJV
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.Often the story of the cross of Christ and words spoken by Christ has not given beyond scripture when retelling of the story. The cup God had prepared for Christ left me wondering yesterday about the literal drink at the cross. Christ admitting his thirst. He, according to Matthew 27:34 was offer vinegar with gall. Which would of been vinegar mixed with a drug and Christ refused it. Yet was there a second drink at the cross. Matthew 27:47 indicates maybe. John Gospel indicates what he drank was a vinegar drink much like our sodas, or mild ale type of drink. Christ refused the vinegar with gall but not just plain vinegar drink of perhaps the soldiers near by. If we know he drank not the gall but indication in John says he did what? He received a drink before dying, he wasnt receiving aid for death but something to quench his thirst before his death.
This is the only time Christ says he is thirsty and he received compassion from another while on the cross. Carrying the cross, compassion shown when another helped Jesus carry the cross, the person being Simeon of Cyrene a believer. Compassion by John the apostle as he comforts Jesus' mother.
Surrounding the cross little compassion mainly cruel mocking. Yet despite it all the moments of compassion are clear. Those believing as Christ Messiah not understanding til days later with the resurrection. Keeping these devotions on fact finding mission for education. I do not think I have heard about two drinks offered, so do your own research to satisfy your inner soul. I dug because of the cup Christ's father prepared for him. We think cup a road or journey of the cross or is there a little bit more you decide.
Dear Heavenly Father thank you for facts surrounding Christ's cross and the blessing of a drink. In Jesus precious name, Amen. Continual Scripture Study: Matthew 27:34 KJV
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
Matthew 27:47-48 KJV
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. http://www.turtle30cshell.com
