Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisPsalm 56:1-13 KJV
1 To the chief Musician upon Jonathelemrechokim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath. Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me.
2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.
7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.
8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.
11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?Jonathelemrechokim(hebrew for the silent dove of far-off places)Michtam(hebrew for uncertain/unknown) of David. When the Philistines took him at Gath. Remember Gath legend was the defeat of Goliathe. It also city that stole the ark and the people got tumors and they sent the ark back. Gath became afraid of David's God. Now with a little background of Israel relation with the Philistines' city called Gath read the Psalm again of David when warring with the Philistines (I Samuel 21 and 29).
Characteristic of David as a weak and crazy man makes no since when realize it the same people who he as a boy killed the giant. David making himself less then a warrior as some crazy man before Achish king of Gath makes no since until one realize David out number in ranks and so David makes a sanity case before Achish King of Gath. David some how becomes friends to the king Achish that the king wanted him to return to his homeland before they went to war against Israel. His enemy of Gath could of killed him but he made peace with his enemies despite he would war against them(I Samuel 29). King Saul and his son Johnathan would die in battle(I Samuel 31).
Read the Psalm again. We see a fearful David but also one that knows to trust in God. He has acted insane for whst purpose. God has had him anointed. David should know he will not die yet because he not yet a king just anointed to be the future king. He recognizes his fear misplaced. With that knowledge we see a very human David despite his victory in battle against the Philistines, he still has human fear. David now trapped between two kings and being mentally push between two kings that want him dead, but King Achish wants to release him from his country before he gors to war.
David finally gets his head screwed on right and goes to his homeland to war against the Philistines of Gath. In this Psalm David is speaking he will not fear what man would do but instead he was in fear of his God. By end of the Psalm David acknowledges that he will walk in tbe light of God's word.
Dear Heavenly Father despite are human fears help us trust in you and not worry what man will do. For you will cause even our enemies to let go of us and even us to fight against them. In Jesus precious name, Amen. Continual Scripture Study: 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 KJV
8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
