Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 10:38-42 KJV
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
What your mindset? Are you like Martha or Mary? Are you in God service trying to force others to serve. Are you like Mary needing to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him. Our service to Christ is not enlisting others to do the same. I observed a pianist who was playing during altar call time come off her bench and go to the altar to pray. There were many muscians in the church. The pastor asked her why she was not playing the piano as if the altar call was not for her. He was minister who waited on others despite his own need of an altar at times, yet he chose to wait for those coming down the aisle. Was the minister uncaring of the pianist need or just recentful that he felt he was serving alone instead bowing at the supper table of Jesus.
Often those serving feel they can not bow. We are wondering why the servers need time of refreshment. Failure to see only ones own need is the first act of worldliness. The part serving Christ is reaching beyond your own need and serving another. I was watching old movie last night. The humbleness of the nuns went beyond what most protestants understand. Whether movie demonstrated truth about the catholic church it had a good image of serving Christ in humility.
What does it meam to serve Christ in humilty. One we must hear the word of God and pray. Removal of sin of any kind that contains even thoughts of vanity, disobedience, sexual immortality, lack of Christian charity, gossip, envy, desires to have or acieve greatness by ones own power, boastfulness, so on and so forth. The piety became to much for the young noviced(nun) when her father was killed and she was ill. She left the covent after 18 years of humble service.
There is a point there things that happen in humanity that beyond our own ability to serve. The only place to go is truly and spiritually the altar of faith.
Martha is serving but Mary had spiritual need to listen. Martha thought her need of having Mary help was more important. Can you humbly serve when no one else is helping. The meal at the altar of faith should not be hurried.
Dear Heavenly Father fill your servants to serve humbly and an strength them so others can listen to your word and feed at the altar of grace. In Jesus prwcious name, Amen.
