Sinner That Washed Jesus' Feet 3/18/2024
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 7:36-50 KJV
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
This is not the anointing in Lazarus' house before the crucifixion but this story takes place in the Pharisees house name Simeon. A woman who was a sinner. It does not say a prostitute. She may of been even a gentile but she is a sinner in that city. Scripture does tell her sin. In fact why she was allowed to walk into a Pharisees house at all is unclear but she had. She came in because their was a dinner party. She came with anointment to anoint not only Jesus feet but his head also. She used her tears to wash his feet and dried his feet with her hair. Her humility continue as Simeon question Jesus being even a prophet because he had allowed her to touch him. It has to do with purity laws in religious life, yet a gentile would of ignored such tradition.
Jesus begans to tell a parable. About two debtors one who owe more then the other and both debts forgiven who loved his creditor more. Simeon said the one that was forgiven the most debt. This woman washed my feet and anointed my head and you did not even offer me water to wash my feet. This woman has not stopped kissing my feet and he tells her to go in peace her sins are forgiven. Phariseea knew he was forgiven by his righteousness but Jesus say something interesting to him you did not anoint my head. Jesus being Messiah and yet he was never anoint by man to be their Messiah. He was God chosen not man chosen. Actually he was chosen by God because he created him with his word already appoint because He is the Word of God in the flesh. However he walked the earth as a man and did participate in social custom. No form of anoint for office as Messiah, a prophet or/and even a king never took place besides the baptism performed by John the baptist and God anointed him their and testified to the listen there. As far as the priesthood anointed him for service they did not. He working outside the will of human leadership. God does work outside human leadership. God authority is not controlled by man.
Peter and John were freed more then once by the power of God in prison, Paul unfortunately had to use his own creditials for freedom more then once.Yet Paul used chains as a testimony and his suffering for Jesus. Peter and John had no Roman creditials. Paul had a creditials because he been a Roman soldier and knew a percentage of law. Paul showed the Christian value of the law with dealing with the government.
Jesus speaking under his own authority to the Pharisees and they wonder who he was and why could he forgive sin. In Mark at time of the trial the High Priest ask Jesus if he was the son of the Blessed(a reference to Mary). Did some know who Jesus was, but no doubt others did not know.
Jesus does have power to forgive sin. He paid the price on the cross for yours and my sin. His great love forgave the world of sin we have to receive it.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for being forgiver of sin. In Jesus precious name, Amen. Continual Scripture Study: Mark 14:61 KJV
61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? http://www.turtle30cshell.com
