Well Of Water
1/15/2023

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

John 4:1-8 KJV
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

This story in John 4 can be divided into 4 section easily maybe even six but I will stop dividing at four. Jesus did not baptize but his disciples did. Interesting comment until one remembers a few chapters over John the Baptist had said that one was coming that would baptize with the Holy Spirit and other Gospels say with fire(implying the fire of the Holy Spirit not actual physical fire like a campfire, but a spiritual fire). Jesus not baptizing because his baptism was not with physical water but with a spiritual baptism. Though the baptism of water was introduction to the spiritual baptism it was not the one Jesus does with the heart. We are outwardly baptized in faith with the knowledge of scripture but spiritual baptism must take place with the individual spirit being born again by the spirit of God into faith and trust in Jesus. In John 4 we will see a spiritual transformation of a woman at the well. Jesus and his disciples had traveled to Jacob's well and he his disciples had gone off to get meat. He ask the woman to give him a drink of water. Will the woman give him a drink?

John 4:9-14 KJV
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The woman was from Samaria, and it was a known fact that Jews had nothing to do with Samaritans. The begining of inquiry why would Jesus even talk or even ask for a drink of water, he had nothing to put water in. There was a time in our history that whites and blacks drank from different fountains even, so this story is not even hard to picture for generation born in the early 60's. However, in some circles even during the time of different fountains this would sound insane as well. This in scripture is not a black and white issue as much a genetic issue of cross bredding with other cultures. These Samaritans even had Jewish heritage but they were not a Jew only, because of it they were outcasted. We think racism in America has been evil imagine a people not even willing to give a drink or receive a drink just because of heritage. I think how far America as come dealing with racism and I realize how much further our nation has to go with dealing with the reality all people are created equal including women. That was another strike against Jesus that day he was conversing with this woman who was from Samaria for a drink. She was foreign origin from his people. All he asked for was water. He did not ask to marry her. Yet the woman wanted to know what he plan to drink with if she fetched him water. She was not the problem as much beyond pointing out the cultural heritage issue, but she did not know how she could serve him with out something to either draw water with or at the minimum something in which to put water in once it was drawn because the water was deep.

Finally Jesus said to her if you knew who asked you for a drink you would of asked him to give you living water. She asked him if he was greater then their father Jacob who had given the well and drank of it himself and his children and cattle? Jesus said the water I would give you, a person would never be thirty again. Water I give is from the well is springing up from eternal life. This water that had nothing to do with the water that preserved human life because of dehydration, this water had to do with spiritual life, dealing with everlasting life. The water that one never had to have another drop of in order to be saved. This was water of spiritual endless life that did not fade away. She knew of her father Jacob and also probably father Abraham who was righteous before God because he believed. What was Jesus offering her that she did not already have by faith? The sacrifice were required year to year, Jesus was taking away the sacrifice of sin for eternity through faith in him. She understood he spoke of spiritual things that had nothing to with water in the well.

John 4:15-30 KJV
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

The woman said give me this water so i never be thirsty again. Jesus said to go and call her husband. She said I have no husband and Jesus said you have had five husbands and the one you live with is not your husband. She understood the reality this man was more then a teacher but at the least a prophet. It does not speak of her having guilt for not being married. However she had to resolve a spiritual issue of where to worship God. In Samaria or in Jerusalem only. She understood that faith of the Jewish people was of God. He tells her a time was coming that neither one would worship in Jerusalem or Samaria but all believers would worship in Spirit and in truth. She said she knew the Messiah comes which is called Christ(the anointed) and he would tell them all things. Jesus had told her stuff that he should not of known about her. Jesus tells her he is whom she speaks. She drops her pot and runs to tell the men of her village. They would come back with her because some believed when she told them that he told her all things about herself. Others would believe when they met Jesus.

John 4:31-43 KJV
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

While the woman was going to fetch her village, disciples had a discourse with Jesus about the woman she talked with and whether he was hungry. It is true that spiritual meat is often more filling then any human fleshly meat can offer when one is hungry and even tired. Jesus was receiving meat of his labor while talking with the woman and when the village returned to talk to him. Disciples were ready to meet his physical earthly need, but it was the hunger to see people brought to him for spiritual healing that he truly craved. A pastor in a pulpit hungers to see his church filled and people saved. It something they can not get enough of. Though they can not do either, the move of God is not only felt in his heart concerning the church and the people within his church. He is praying for the spiritual revival as well as salvation coming to each person in need of it. To belong to a body of believers is to have a heart for the believers in the church, or to care for each one whether you like them or not. To know they had to come to the cross as you did. To know you had to come to the altar of faith. Jesus was the Messiah, he needed no altar, but he needed sheep, he need to speak the words for someone to know who he was by spiritual faith and not by him telling them who he was. The woman after a discourse knew he was sent from God. Did she understand all there was to know about he Messiah, no but she knew enough that knew when he said he was him, she was able to believe based on evidence she had received. This was meat for our Savior. Meat that spoke of the testimony of who he is. When we praise him, we are offering the sacrifice of praise off our lips, it is a meal for our Lord.

When we talk about the water baptism earlier of the disciples this is where disciples are planting and sowing seed of faith to be recieved in the heart. Jesus is the one that reaps the spiritual heart unto salvation by Spiritual birth upon faith. He speaks of the order of operation of which faith is sown and delivered into eternal life, and a New Creature is born of faith in God. Many of the Samaritans came and were born again because of faith that Jesus was the Messiah. A small revival had broken out and Jesus remained there in that revival for couple of days, before traveling onward.

This is the type of revival the church world needs, this is the type of revival our hearts need in rememberance of our own salvation and our need for our Savior who baptized us into faith in God(Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Sometimes as believers we need a renewing of our faith and regenerating of our faith in Christ. All we have to do is ask the one that baptized our hearts unto savalation his name is Jesus. All we need to do is ask God to fill us with his grace and love. To give us the hope we need. To fill us with His Spirit to do his will of testifying oto others of who Jesus is. To be like the Samaritan woman in need of a cup that over flows into every town, village and beyond our reach to testify who Jesus is.

Dear Heavenly Father we come asking you to baptize to fill your people with your Spirit to send them forth in preparing the way for the next great revival in our land. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Romans 10:13-15 KJV
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Titus 3:4-8 KJV
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
