Following Jesus

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

John 1:29-42 KJV
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

It important to note days after the baptism of Jesus, John was still baptizing in the Jordan. John seeing Jesus pass by would declare that his was the Lamb of God. God's sacrifice, God's Son, the one that would take away the sins of the world. Did he understand who the Lamb was or what it was about. In truth I think there was many mysteries surrounding who Jesus was even at the time of Christ. Why because the Jews were to blind to who Jesus was as Messiah. As John made declaration of who Jesus was even to his own disciples, two would leave John and follow Jesus. One being Andrew who would find Peter his brother and tell him that he found the Messiah. No doubt there was discussion in John's group of who this man was. because John had to point Jesus out more then once to the disciples. John would continue to have people follow him, yet he knew he was prefered before Jesus and Jesus before him and yet also came after him. to understand a little clear in John 1:1-14 it is declared that Jesus is the word of God that became flesh, meaning he was before John, but he also came after John. He preceded the Baptizer but he was also coming after him. God's word of prophesy came before John and the word of prophesy would come after John. Jesus is called the Alpha and Omega because he is the first and the last.

There so much that went on during the days of Christ's baptism besides just the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, that is often overlooked. Yet because we can slow down and take a look we can see many things occuring that are note worthy beside the baptism. The first followers of Jesus would come to be. The first disciples of Jesus would inquire where Jesus was staying. Jesus would say come and see. I will be honest it sounds like a simple curiousity, a simple following, but did the disciples understand what it a Lamb was. I know they knew about the sacrificial lamb taken to the altar. For Peter was a devout Israelite. Certain things were known, but did they see the lamb of God as being a sacrificial lamb at this point, probably not. That would not come until the arrest of Jesus and his own death and resurrection where the prophetic words could be analysized for understanding by God's Spirit. The wording of the Lamb, the chosen of God to take away the sins of the world was there in just one word the Lamb of God. Yet all they could see was Jesus is and was a rabbi(teacher) at the moment though the words Lamb is spoken.

Perhaps the title Lamb is really speaking of the infant and not the man for the moment. John the baptist was foredain to his call to declare who Christ was, but John was infant when the declaration began as he leaped in his mother's womb. Lamb inplies infant or child, and not a ram. The declaration is of past and not present in regards to his birth here. Peter in time would call Jesus the Christ(the annointed). Peter early following only knew Jesus was a teacher. Yet he followed him as a student of faith. Seeking to learn from him, not understanding his call to serve and to fish with Jesus.

Some come to Jesus from the sweet image of their Savior being born, never getting to the cross, no the cross is essential to understanding his ability to rise again. To know his saving power did not stop at the grave. The image of the grave is often the stopping point of followers of any prophet, teacher or preacher and rightly so. Even if one teacher besides Christ rose from the dead, their disciples following of them would be in vain, because that teacher is not the lamb promised by God. Dead brought back to life including a child during Elijah day(shumanite son) was not the lamb. The rising of dead not unheard of but unusual event that denoted only a miracle, but for Jesus it meant more because he was the chosen of God take away the sins of the world, the one that would show there was life after death. Peter followed Jesus not knowing the term lamb was more then just infant, but the man, the Christ, the Son of God that would go to the cross to take away the sins of the world because many man would not obey God unto death. Daniel obeyed God but he was not the lamb. Shadrach, Meshrach and Abednego was not the lamb, though their obedience got them the fourth man in the fire(Jesus) protection.

Only the Lamb could take away the sins of the world as they crucified him for obeying God. The only one chosen for this particular work of God. Predesign for the work of forgiveness of sin. No Peter knew about repentance he knew not about the Lamb to be sacrificed was a man. Peter following Jesus before and after his death would take up his own cross to declare who the Lamb was to the world in which he found himself minister too. He would one day be crucified upside down. Would he have followed knowing the end of his life story? Only with the knowledge of the reality of the resurrection. Yet he knew not before th cross, but knowing after Christ suffered, died and roe again, Peter feared not in following in faith in Jesus.

Are you following the price you might pay, or do you follow without knowledge that suffering because of faith still can occur. We want to think our faith and society is more tolerant then the need to persecuted. Yet we wrestle not with flesh and blood but demons and evil of this world we live in that will try and keep us from believing in Jesus.

Dear Heavenly thank you for sending your Son Jesus as the Lamb of God, coming innocently first as a baby, then a teacher, then our Savior for he would be sacrificed for our sin. As we follow Christ Journey this winter through Easter, we as you to guide our footsteps and help us to remember the things he taught his disciples and showed his disciples. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: John 21:17-22 KJV
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
