Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 2:8-18 KJV
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

When I was seven or eight I had to memorize this portion of scripture for a fairly large church we attended for the Christmas program or for something else. The truth the reason for the memorization escapes me now but the passage is still in my heart though memorization is not so great. The information of the Christmas story so important. The appearance of an angel not once, not twice but three times in the story is significant. It is the Heavenly host appearing tops all other three accounts to the magnification of the importance of the coming Messiah. The angels here are bring news of joy to all people. God sending his own servants to do the job that those knowing were keeping hushed, not completely silent, but it take more to spread this news. This news was not meant to be keep silent in Israel.

Curiousity of the Shepherds who first fearful now were running to find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger. The Shepherds found all three lying in a manger(makeshift shelter). No doubt the young couple was tired first the journey to Bethelehem, the birth of the baby and Joseph also establishing a shelter for themselves. Manger a place outside the inn in an inner court outside where animals were kept that the poor were allow to set up a place to stay. As the story goes we understand the shelter could also been a barn or cave. Isaiah 60 explains it with the open sky nestled between trees.

Shepherd upon finding the baby went an told everyone they knew and people they meet that the Messiah was born. People wondered about this news told to them by the shepherds. God was making sure all people knew about his son's birth this first Christmas.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for commanding the news to be spread. The angels could not keep this story of our Saviour birth quiet but it spread to everywhere. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Matthew 28:18-20 KJV
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
