Mary's Account

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 1:26-38 KJV
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

I have always picture Mary as a very young woman. Just barely old enough to get married. Her age is unknown but she is a virgin. She said she never been with any man and by strict religious customs she may of never been kissed before. The idea of pregnancy would of been foreign from her. Just because she lived in a city, she was not ignorant of conception in that day and time for livestock and gentiles ran in the streets of the city of Nazareth. I can almost guarantee no matter how prim and proper Jewish society tried to be the Romans and Greeks were not that nor the assyrians, lets not forget the Caldeans and Babylonians. All cultures of idolatry, prostitution and so forth. Israel during time of corruption would of had the same problem because of Idolatry in there land and slack in religious faith in God among the majority.

Mary was a jew not only by birth but of faith. Angel visited her six months after Zacharias visitation. Mary's cousin of Elizabeth was a daughter of Aaron, Mary perhaps woyld of been one too, and she daughter line of King David by birth. Mary would be part of the legal and religious tribes. Both groups would know about it, and every remaining tribe of Israel in Jerusalem as well. The ideal of angels visiting being a religious story only not a reality for Mary until the appearance of Gabriel occurred. No doubt she was afraid, but it was that announcement Gabriel brought from God that caused Mary to wonder because she was a virgin.

The truth of matter Mary was espoused/ betrothe/engaged/promised to a man for marriage to be married. Customs of faith for some trump desire, want and need. Mary had not been with Joseph as a lover, something that is customary outside religious culture like devout jewish and Christian customs today. In Jewish law a woman could be Stoned for being pregnant before marriage or prostition unless in cases of rape. Just because one culture says it is okay doesnt mean it okay in another.

An angel told Mary the conception of this child would be by the Holy Spirit and he would overshadow her. God shadow would surround her. Mary's words were let be done as according to God's word. The angel declared nothing was impossible for God. And reassured her with news that her Cousin Elisabeth was pregnant.

Now back up who will Jesus be but a king and be taking the throne of Mary's forefather King David. Now when we have to ask what type power was King David, he was a man of war and one of deep spiritual faith following the will if God. King David was with flaws. Jesus would rule man's heart and still does today with spiritual truth that can not be denied. Mary was willing herself to obey the word of God for life and culturally speaking her life and faith would depend on God's protection from God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit. We will speaking about that in days to come.

Dear Heavenly help those reading to believe and receive your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Psalm 119:38 KJV
38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

Romans 4:19-21 KJV
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
