God's Blessings In The Early Church: Lesson 1 5/02/2022
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisActs 1:1-11 KJV
1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
The early church was forming with the disciples/apostles of Christ before Jesus was taken even up into heaven. Mind you it was not a big revival considering Christ had been crucified and then resurrected. Forty days with his people does not seem like a long time to remain on earth, and yet it was for the evidence he was risen. Christ resurrection put his physical life even in more jeopardy and he was no longer in the old body but in the transformed body of incorruptible flesh. His scars still there for all to see. What is the blessing of Christ with the disciples forty days, he tells them the Holy Spirit would be giving them commands to those he has chosen. The new covenant spoken of in Hebrews 10 says the Holy Spirit will write his laws on their heart. Here is my question to you: Is there any difference in the time period of the early church to the time period of Moses in the wilderness when the Holy Spirit descended on the 70 elders, or even on Moses and Aaron alone. We are looking at a new account of new believers and some of the old law merging together first being in the land of Israel and spreading forth. Had God changed his laws? The answer is no, but was the laws still part of the new foundation of faith.
To understand Christ established the main law of loving the Lord God with all one's heart, soul, mind and strength and then to love one's neighbor has oneself. We get caught up with the Old Testament law and the laws that followed to help society to the point we fail to realize the whole law point was about love. If we look at the mentality of some people, not the one's that want to protect the earth and all living creatures including humans, we see another group that does not care if they litter, if the ozone gets destroyed, or if the neighbor is bullied and so forth. If I stop right there and ask how many people do you know that perfer destruction and not compassion. I then ask, how many people need hope and taught how to love?
The job of God by his Spirit is to teach man to love, even when they desire not too. The blessing of the early church to love, to be taught love. If you see a church leaving the idea of love behind ask yourself is that a Christian church. The church of Philadelphia in Revelation was a church of brotherly love. Things can happen in life that can effect the level of love a person can freely demonstrate through actions of kinds, mercy, grace, long suffering, and so forth. Human's have breaking points whether a believer or unbeliever. However I tell you this a little prayer well carry you through those difficult mile, especiall when your reaction would not of been the reaction you had the day before. Learning to yield to God's first blessing the Holy Spirit who teaches the law of love. We might ask did Jesus always show that love in the way he dealt with certain people. Then I ask were those people deserving of anything less, or expecting anything less, because that how they too taught people. Jesus had to go in order for the Holy Spirit to come to the disciples. The Holy Spirit had left Christ on the cross. Yet he was returning to teach the disciples to love. The greatest blessing is God's continual love for man despite nailing his son on the cross. Christ loves us so much to send his Spirit to instruct, what more can we ask God for. Love is something the world needs more of and not less.
Jesus as we know would ascend into heaven, with the promise of the blessing to come. Yet is the Holy Spirit any different then in the lives of the people of Israel in the beginning stages of faith. The answer is no. We only see a few miracles in the wilderness but for the length of time survival was key to learn for such a large group of people. Can we see our leaders today struggling now with the price of groceries and trying to figure how to help the population without hurting the producers of food. Continue to be able to make sure the markets still have enough food in them. Most of the time these type of things run itself, but in reality it takes more then just letting it run to keep it from destroying itself to where there is no meat, and veggies to eat. We do not just feed America but many other countries as well. When I sit down with my budget I sometimes wonder if it will stand, but God has not failed me yet. What is my point? Can we see the miracles only being part of the journey of Israel and the other time frame, man was still strive to provide for themselves to some degree. Yet it is God's blessing that man able to provide with the hands God has given them to work, to gather, to hunt to store, and to know how to do all these things.
Israel grumbled, complained and turned away from God in their journey only to find a God that still love his people that continued to repent, and seek him. Some did so out of fear and trembling but others found God's love and mercy in their life. When that love and mercy sprung forth it is something that can be taught in the lives of the people.
The gathering of disciples would go through their own journey of faith, hope and love. God mercy came with healings and miracles to demonstrate his power. Came with the simple teaching of the Gospel of all that repented, would become a new creation in Christ, the old person passing away and the old person becoming new like a butterfly. Because of the transformation people would be given a new leash on life, a new chance, and a new beginning. The Holy Spirit was coming to give man a new begining, to live a life of love, faith and hope.
Can we understand that love must come first with faith in Christ Jesus. Then loving as Christ loved us when allowed us to crucify him on that cross, to break the law of God simply was the biggest sin of them all, okay there one more but it unpardonable. God allows us to break his law/word to lay it aside and pick it up again and to obey it. When we break God's law we are crucifying Christ all over again. We all sin and all fall short of the glory of God. God is not only able to resurrect his word but repair it. He is not only able to allow man to do what they do, but able to resurrect his Son.
Dear Heavenly Father thank you for the first blessing of your Holy Spirit that would come to teach the disciples of yesteryears and even today your commands of loving you and others. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: Hebrews 10:15-24 KJV
15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21 And having an high priest over the house of God;
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
