The March Through The Gospels: Lesson 18 3/18/2022
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisMatthew 14:24-33 KJV
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
This story is interesting and I wonder what so important about this story after knowing people followed the ship Jesus was in out to the desert place in yesterday lesson, yet the disciples been at sea since they left the crowd and here comes Jesus walking on water. Either Jesus showed his power or something else was happening that the story does not shed light on until you look deeper. How deep was the water, will a small vessel that held twelve disciples and maybe enough room for a few more if need be, I say it floating out at sea, would have to be a certain distance away because the boat would of dragged the bottom of the sea with the weight within it. Now those that never been on a little boat have no clue what I am writing about. However fill a tub with water or a pot will do and place a bowl with pebbles or something in it and keep adding until it sinks, what you discover more weight the lower it will sink, til eventually it will flood the little bowl of pebbles. Now with that understood how much weight is twelve men over 2000 lbs and it has no shocks like a vehicle has to hold up the added weight. Ships are not made that way. How far is Peter out to sea, a good distance off with the other disciples when Jesus scared them, for they thought him to be a spirit/ghost and he was not, he was in the flesh. When Jesus spake to them Peter wanted to walk on water too, and so Jesus said come on and he did. He walked on water, only to discover he was able to, and then the waves and wind caused him fear, and he began to sink. Jesus stretch foth his hand and caught him, and told him he had not enough faith, to do it? Fear can do many things and for Peter it caused him to sink, because it out weight for the moment his faith.
How many of us have faith to step out and walk on water, not literally water and unless God says so, but how many of us have faith to follow Jesus, not look back and no turning back. Sometimes the waves around us are pressing us down but what we find is Jesus wants to hold our hand, to lift us up, to help us to stand. He doesn't want us to look to human solution, but to him. Our human side our practical side seem sometimes far greater when you think of size of Jesus standing on the water, but he takes his power and grabs Peter by the hand and say yeah of little faith. It is much like a father taking a child by the hand on a log that fallen over a steep bank and says come on walk across and the child says I am to afraid looking down the valley below. When the father takes the child by the hand he steadies the child to help him cross not alone, but with his father. God not making you walk alone over the water, on top that sea, nor is he making you walk the narrow bridge of faith alone, he standing with his hand out, sometimes holding your hand and sometimes lifting you up and sometimes he is carrying you over his shoulder, but he never dragging you, forcing you, or putting you in place you do not want to be. Peter wanted to walk on water like Jesus, but I can picture Peter getting excited when he began to walk on the sea, and then he realizes that wave is taller then him that is going by and the wind is whipping him and all those waves seem larger then life and here he is walking on water by whose power, not his own, but at the moment he thinks he can not protect himself from those waves, the minute he thinks he might be trampled on by the world. The minute he thinks he is entrapped by the the things surrounding him, and behind him, he begins to sink. He begins to drown by all the confusion around him, because he can not simply keep his eyes on Jesus, to keep looking to the one that can save him.
When we step out in faith, we can not worry about those waves and storms around us. People will say all sorts of things. We have to just allow Jesus to hold our hand, lead us on, and help us to stand. One might feel the storm around us, but Jesus wants to take us straight through it. Life in general is a delight, fun, enjoyable, until the storm comes and the wave of stress, fear and emotions coming crashing down on you and it feels like it is to much, look to Jesus. When you give your life to Jesus, he not forgetting you, nothing you are going through is not uncommon to man, but what God does is supernatural for you and you know it, because when the fear changes, the stress decreases, you know your eyes are on Jesus still and you further down the road of life. The bridge the Father took his Son across is available for you and I. See Jesus wept knowing he was going to a cross, Jesus prayed keeping his eyes on his Father, and his will for him. No human wants to feel pain, no human wants to suffer, but sometimes suffering comes, but Jesus is there through it all.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to keep our eyes on Jesus knowing he bore his cross, and his able to help us to bear ours. Help us in the storms that press around us as we look to your salvation(Jesus) and to you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
