In The Presence Of My Enemies
6/04/2022

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Psalm 23:1-6 KJV
1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

In the presence of my enemies, God does what? He prepares a table before me. He sets that table of rich bounty of food. Okay so what it is a piece of Jesus or piece of bread only, it a bounty when you had nothing to eat. When the enemy is trying to destroy you, trying to rid you of even the basic necessity of life. Poor man or woman the last time they bought new clothes might of been a life time ago. Yet the blessings of just material item might seem trivial to someone working for days and months trying to make ends meet. I was thinking yesterday of luxuries I do not have myself, and I realized those luxuries are they necessary for survival. Example would be a new food processor with mixer and blender combined with it. What about a microwave, haven't used one in years. Kitchen gadgets most consider necessary for survival, and yet in truth these things are blessings, but not necessary for use. People made cakes for years before ever electricity or mixers were made. What our luxury is taught us is easier and more simpler way of living, going without teaches what, luxury is over rated. I lost these items over ten years ago, and have only missed when I first lost them to over use probably. The simple things people think are necessary that are not. Most of us can shred chicken or even dice it up for a meal. Food processor only makes the process more proficient, but it not necessary. Their great chefs in the world that own only sharp knives to chop, dice and multilate food. What my point, the feast God prepares before is not fixed with material items necessarily, but it can be, but with spiritual food to restore, deliver and provide for our spiritual life. It is a dinner feast the enemy can not take from you even if you are surrounded by them.

When the Lord says you are his Shepherd and you shall not want, he claiming he going to take care of your needs. We see homeless in city streets without and we wonder is the Lord their Shepherd. Did God change from Old to New Testament, is there something we do not understand. If we are in God's presence and we hungry, have holey and baggy clothes is God still providing for us.

What is God's provision, and why should he be glorified for it. Everything man eats God has had a part of in some form or fashion. God created plants and animals, trees, bushes and anything that might be consider edible. When we get the product in the store to produce a meal, science may of mutated to appear to be food. Old timers might say you have to know where to look for food but it is there and not out of a garabage pail. Walk through the woods there plenty to snack on if you know where to gather it from. Most of us today, no little about the plants that will keep us from starving in the woods, or in open field. Most could not make a hook and find thread enough to fish with, much less make a fish spear to catch a fish with. Most of us would not know how to slaughter a pig, kill a cow, or butcher a deer. Our nation as well as many other nations know how to produce luxuries and know how to go to the store and get the best bargains. The idea of hunting party almost extinct. How many of us could whittle a hook for fishing line to catch a fish? Knowledge one might never use, but could you if you needed too to live?

As people grow old they stay has independent as they can. Knowledge of whittling a hook for fishing seems like wasted knowledge unless one had to use it for survival. Yet we talk about God's provision as Shepherd. We often fail to realize the blessings God has given each of us to use. No matter how primitive that knowledge is or is not. The blessing of provision is not by hand, or our knowledge sometimes, it by God's hand alone. God told Noah how to build ark to survive and he told Elijah to go to this location and who feed him but a raven. God's provision is not always with our hands. God's provision is not always by dropping manna and quail from heaven. Obeying the Spirit is the part often missing in our life, to receiving God's blessings that will glorify him. Elijah was being hidden by God from his enemies and cared for. Moses and tribe of Israel was in need of food and at times wanted to kill Moses and Aaron.

David what was he eating in the middle of his enemies was right on the dinning table of King Saul, for he almost was hit by a spear the king threw. Even with the threat of his life David still glorified his Shepherd, his protector, his Shepherd that provided, and his Shepherd that meet his needs. David wanted to dwell in the house of the Lord forever. To humble bow and glorify his Creator. He knew the protection of God when as a boy he wrestle bears and lions to protect his father's sheep.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for your provision, your preparing a table in the presence of my enemies, and even giving me the ability to worship at your throne, whereever I am, because your Spirit goes with your children. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 1 Kings 17:1-4 KJV
1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

1 Samuel 20:33-34 KJV
33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
