Mini Sermon series: Palm Sunday
by Christina Farris
4/01/2012

Palm Sunday as we celebrate the triumphal entry of our Lord and Savior, let us praise and worship Jesus our King. Let us begin by reading from Luke 19 starting at verse 29 and going through verse 36.

Luke 19:29-36
29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.

After you been married for so many years you learn when you spouse says go and do and you find it. However men still never learn. For they are always hunting their socks, or that tool they misplace. Only to seconds later have a wife to come by and say did you not look where I told you and going to that very spot find the tool or item the husband was looking for in that place. If men were as obedient to instruction, woman would never have to find anything. Yet the way of society is I need map, I need direction and I need a goaled.

This morning is Palm Sunday and though it is the beginning of a week filled with much instruction to the disciples as well as key events that would lead up to the crucifixion it is clear Christ had the map. His first instruction where to his disciples. It was not about hunting a colt. It was about going and getting the colt that was already waiting to be used. The disciples through out Jesus ministry had learn to obey his commands. It is a very simple command to go, get and bring. A command He gives each of His disciples to go, get and bring in relationship to sharing the gospel. We are to go and get people and bring them to Jesus. Jesus has need of each person you bring to Him, no matter their race, their age, and their sex. This story is about obedience of following Christ commands.

Jesus set the direction in which to go in order to find the colt that was available for use. Then they were to receive permission to use the colt. They were not just to take and steal the colt, but to receive permission for use. The minute someone enslaves you for a task that you desire not to do, is the minute you are not longer giving permission to be of use. However the minute you give permission for God to use you, is the minute God can begin to do a work in your life.

This colt just minding his own business, property of someone else, was being unshackled to the post he was tied too. Much the same way we are unshackled from sin, but we must give God permission to unshackle us from sin to be able to give service to God. The use of this colt was to bring glory and honor to God. For Jesus would ride on Him and many would worship Christ as king that day in the streets. This colt having honor beyond measure, yet being in the forefront of the events to take place but not given chief honor, which was bestow on the rightful person Jesus.

Position and prestige is often evaluated by the ability to command. Yet the ability to serve God is not a burden. For the colt was equip to handle the weight of our Lord. The cross we bear for Jesus, is nothing compared to our sins that place on his shoulders. When we allow God to give instruction and we choose to obey, we are set first free from sin, and then put into a useful service of honor. However it is never chief position. We can either follow Christ instruction or we can find ourselves wandering about searching for a ride toward heaven only not to find it. The salvation through Christ is clear, we must be born again spiritually, to enter the kingdom of heaven and there is only one way to do that, and that is to believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Upon belief repent of our sins and ask forgiveness and the load of sin is taken away and new way of doing things begin by following in obedience to God.
