I am you host Christina Farris today is April 30, 2016, today message is entitled: Follow Me Jesus came to save who, is the question of the day? Let us read today passage from Mark 2:14-22 KJV(14) And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. (15) And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. (16) And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? (17) When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (18) And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? (19) And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. (20) But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. (21) No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. (22) And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles. Jesus called the tax collector Levi who is also probably known as disciple Matthew to come follow. Levi was at the receipt of customs, collecting money at the city gate or boating dock receiving money for who ever came and went through these two areas. Levi upon hearing Jesus call got up and went with Jesus. He traveled with Jesus and took him to his house to eat. Levi invited his sinful friends with him to dinner. This caused a stir among the religious leaders. Nothing new about Jesus causing a stir with religious people. Jesus did not need to teach the religious leaders, but them that were lost. How often one might think one needs to teach the righteous man. A good righteous man is always turning from the evilness of this world and will know the goodness of the ways of God. As long as we live in this world evil will be presence. Jesus needed not to heal the well but the sick. His purpose was to heal the spiritual sickness of this world. The religious leaders were also angry because the disciples did not fast but ate with the heathen. Yet Jesus was clear there was time for his disciples to fast when he was gone. He being the bridegroom of faith. A small declaration of who he was when he used the term bridegroom. Then Jesus declares no one would sew a new cloth on an old cloth, because the old cloth would still tear. I took a bed sheet and sewed a piece of new clother in the tear to try and mend it. Yet the sheet kept tearing. It would of been easier for me to buy a new sheet then to waste the time mending where the sheet would tear only again because it was so worn. Yet it simple really one does what they need to do at time to survive but it not always a good solution. One can not take an elder person in a church used to religious dogma of the church and expect him to learn a new language of speaking the ways of God to younger generation. First he not going to understand the generation or the sin that plagues the new generation. He from old school and the strict discourse of religiousity. It easier for the old man to point fingers and say you sinner you are going to hell then for him to come up and talk to teenager about the music or things going on in his life. Knowing even the old person will say the music is garbage. One will never reach the lost without knowing how to talk or break bread with them. There are thing all people can do with one another. Eating is a common thing. Yet a Jew eating with sinners was taboo in his day. If invited they would fast instead of eating meat or anything consider unclean, or defiled by sinner or they would eat at a different table altogether if served by their own people. Today one goes to a restaurant and does not ask to examine the cook, or servers. One orders and thinks nothing about who is bringing the food. Jewish religious leaders had to be so careful not to defile themselves out of traditions of the cleaniness and uncleanness of the law. New wine can not be poured in to old wine skin for it will burst. The word bottle is used in the passage and i went hunting through my older Bibles to see if my online Bible had typed this correctly. See the word bottle is used, but Christians always say wine skin. If someone reading their Bible might ask what difference would it make on the age of a bottle. Yet the bottle they are speaking of here is wineskin. Wine would age in the wineskin with no trouble, but to put new wine in wine skin to age it eventually would burst before the aging process would be finished, because of aging. It had everything to do with container and nothing to do with the wine for in both old and new containers were wine. You get a new Christian who receives Christ will not know the things that old man knows about God and Jesus. In fact the new Christian is still learning as a new born baby. Someone first learning is being filled with the word. Someone old is filled with the word from youth. The way he was taught might even be different. Jesus point was the people he was teaching knew not all the traditions of the law and to burden them with all the traditions of the law would be headache for them. It would be a deterent for the beleiver to have to follow all the traditions of the temple. Jesus teaching those who were lost from the tribe of Israel. Whose ways were not in the tradition of the saved of Israel but lost of Israel. He was teaching the sinful world about the faith of Israel and their God. It has been an age old problem of our time of the church. Of elders not understanding the ways of the young and instead of helping them understand and learn about God they begin to chase them away, because they forget what it was to be young or from the outside world they came from. New Christian do not be offend by religious old timers, or the preachers, know you have to grow up into shoes of salvation. Last year garment is your skin, but it grows with you. To learn to be a believer is to learn the ways of God one step at a time and to learn to trust in Jesus by first following Him when Jesus calls you to come. The call of God is simply first to repentance and a need for change in your life. The acknowledge that God and Jesus is real. And to recognize the Holy Spirit is speaking to your heart to convict you of imperfection. With the knowledge of imperfection comes the ability to want change and desire change in one's life. To know Christ can and will forgive you of sin and that the first step after confession is to turn away from sin. Asking God to help you live the Christian life because Jesus died for you. He died telling the lost of salvation through the word of God. I thank the Lord today for the opportunity to share his word and his desire to change and mold you into his image. Remember God does not expecting you to understand or know about all his ways instantly you just have to be willing to change with the growing process of knowing him. Be as a container for the new wine with the knowledge of the wine within you is faith in Jesus. Jesus being the wine living in your heart communing with your soul to teach you about his Father, and His Spirit so you know Him not just by the reading of His word but when out and about in the world to stay away from sin. Follow Jesus He will enable your life for him. |
